Ever since my father brought home our first family computer way back in '79, I knew that it was something special. In fact, I think I was the only person on the campus of OBU who had their own computer! Even when I was in the management and accounting fields, I would make sure that I helped out everyone with their computer issues that just because I saw too many people being taken advantage of by the local computer shops.
Eventually, that lead me into full time 'geek' work which I found much more satisfying than bossing people around or counting beans. But that background has served me well. Since I wasn't particularly fond of accounting, I started writing software to take out some of tedious nature of some of my tasks.
And a geek monster was born!

Even though my degree is in Management from OBU, I've been working in the IT world for over 10 years now in just about all facets of computers. From computer repair, taking care of networks that span several states to development using various of different environments.
I started working for a accounting software development firm about 10 years ago and went back to college taking more classes to further my knowledge on all things computers. My first class I took was in networking and servers way back in '95, then it was classes in programming. On down the line, I was placed in situations where taking a class wasn't an option - that would take too much time. Taking a class would take 4 months and the program, server, or SQL project was always due in just a few weeks.
Part of that was self inflicted. Because my degree is in management, I was always looking for a more efficient way handling information and daily tasks. Why hand write all of these forms/invoices when I could write a program to do it for me? Businesses and homes can always benefit from a more efficient way of doing things. That could mean something as complicated as a new application or as simple as making sure that the computer and network was working to its best and most secure capacity.
To me, it doesn't matter if it is a large and complicated project or a simple fixing of a computer. As long as I was able to help someone, that is all that matters to me.
