Because I just couldn't wait to play with the latest stuff and I had a reason to reinstall our SharePoint server [bathroom that floods is above the server room!], I went ahead and installed SharePoint 2010. I read that it requires 8 GB of ram and a quad core - they weren't kidding. It takes a huge amount of resources but the biggest issue I've had is I couldn't browse the libraries via explorer. It was so slow that it was really unusable. My work box I'm running Windows 2008R2 [just like the SharePoint Server] and a quad Xeon but I've noticed the same issue with Windows 7.
The fix: Internet Options - connections - LAN Settings - disable the Automatically detect settings.
Why does that work? I have no idea but it did the trick.
